The role of Phlebotomy Technician is a growing at a rapid rate – it’s anticipated that it is expected to grow by 25% by 2024. Dartmouth-Hitchcock invites you to apply for this exciting opportunity – we have a ‘No Experience Necessary – 90-Day Paid Training Program’ – so we are here to help you jump-start your career in this new area of knowledge!

The program requires a High School Diploma or equivalent, a focus on customer service and providing a great patient experience, along with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Our Phlebotomists (currently a team of 40), work various shifts – mornings, days, evenings or nights, and rotating weekends and holiday coverage is required. Dartmouth-Hitchcock offers generous shift differentials where appropriate.

After the interview process, if you are successful in obtaining an offer to join this awesome team, you can expect the following:

  • To work full-time hours for about 3 months to complete all of the required training in both inpatient and outpatient phlebotomy.
  • When you have completed one year in your role, you can sit the exam to become a Certified Phlebotomist (through ASCP – The American Society for Clinical Pathology).

An integral part of our hospital operations – the role of the Phlebotomist is a key player in the facilitation of collecting and passing along a vital piece of information to our Laboratory and Pathologists to help Dartmouth-Hitchcock achieve its mission of providing each person the best care, in the right place, at the right time, every time.

Summary:

Collects blood samples from patients of all ages. Identifies patients and procures samples.

A listing of the key responsibilities:

  1. Obtains blood specimens from outpatients. Maintains knowledge of specific specimen requirements, and follows the correct order of draw based on tube type and special handing of tests. Utilizes proper resources for obtaining specimen requirement information.
  2. Collects and enters off-site blood work into system.
  3. Completes and processes a variety of forms. Obtains pre-authorizations and patient signatures.
  4. Prepares specimens for in-lab testing or off-site shipment. Processes specimens that require special handling according to established procedures or protocols.
  5. Ensures blood drawing stations are clean and well stocked.
  6. Produces accurate work under pressure, changing volumes of work, and tight deadlines.
  7. Performs other duties as required or assigned.

  • High school graduate or the equivalent required.
  • 1 year of medical/technical experience desired.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required.
  • Proven work experience with the public.
  • Strong computer ability desired.
  • Applicant must be honest, dependable, able to multi-task, and be detail oriented.
  • BLS required within 30 days of employment.
  • Certified Phlebotomist, ASCP preferred.

Dartmouth-Hitchcock’s Phlebotomy Career Ladder allows for growth and development in this critical patient-centered field.

Employees with no experience start as a Phlebotomist Trainee and work to complete basic competencies in both blood drawing and computer skills. Once independent, the employee automatically moves into the Phlebotomist 1 tier and works on strengthening their skills with specialty draws and exposure to various draw settings. In this phase, employees begin studying for and working towards achieving national certification.

In the next tier, Phlebotomist 2, employees can grow skills in onboarding new employees and independently running sites throughout the region. With the completion of further training and skill development, employees progress to Phlebotomist 3 where they continue to work on staying up to date on skills and sharing with their coworkers.

There are promotional opportunities that follow the auto-progressing ladder that include Team Leads, Assistant Supervisor and Supervisor. The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine supports employees by providing the necessary educational materials to move through the ladder and maintain their national certification. Staff are subject matter experts within a few short years and stay up to date on the latest technologies and best practices for phlebotomists.
