Once independent, the employee automatically moves into the Phlebotomist 1 tier and works on strengthening their skills with specialty draws and exposure to various draw settings. In this phase, employees begin studying for and working towards achieving national certification.

In the next tier, Phlebotomist 2, employees can grow skills in onboarding new employees and independently running sites throughout the region. With the completion of further training and skill development, employees progress to Phlebotomist 3 where they continue to work on staying up to date on skills and sharing with their coworkers.

There are promotional opportunities that follow the auto-progressing ladder that include Team Leads, Assistant Supervisor and Supervisor. The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine supports employees by providing the necessary educational materials to move through the ladder and maintain their national certification.
